Background
After suffering ‘agony’ with her left hip for over a year, Marilyn booked a consultation with Dr. Thomas Boerger at the Specialist Medical Clinic in Gibraltar.
‘You could hear me coming! My hip was bone-on-bone; absolutely agony’ she confirms. ‘I was apprehensive of having the op of course, but believe me, afterwards the relief and pain-free mobility totally outweighs the operation and recovery! I was walking the next day!
I had been putting off going to see a specialist, but at the time I had my own restaurant and it got to the point I could no longer stand for long, so I knew I had to do something’.
The Consultations
‘I had my consultations for both my Hip Replacements at Specialist Medical Clinic, in Gibraltar. I was able to get my private x-rays done through the GHA and within a few weeks I was in the private hospital in Marbella for the Hip Replacement.
Dr. Boerger is a lovely man. He really takes the time to explain everything carefully before and after the operation. He made me feel totally at ease. I appreciated that he explained everything properly to me. In the pre- and post- op consultations he would describe the procedure and afterwards show images on his computer of the successful procedure. It was reassuring’ confirms Marilyn.
The Procedures
I arrived the day of the operation. Dr. Boerger saw me after the pre-op tests and then I was called into theatre.
I had both hips replaced without general anaesthetic, instead I had an epidural. It felt surreal, as I could feel nothing, so it I didn’t seem like the procedure I was undergoing was mine.
Afterwards I was taken back to my room. I was in discomfort once the epidural wore off, but nothing like the pain I was living with daily before with the damaged hip.
My second procedure in 2017 was at the HC Marbella private hospital near Puerto Banus. It was really a nice place – I mean if I wasn’t there for an operation and in discomfort, I would have enjoyed it. Although it was the second time for me to have a Hip Replacement, I was still apprehensive. But I needn’t have worried.
Post-Procedure Recovery
I was walking the day after the operation. I had discomfort from the surgery, but no pain from the hip. During my stay in the private hospital I had daily physio, where they teach you how to start walking with the new hip, like how best to climb and descend stairs.
And once I got home after about 4 or 5 nights in the hospital, I was able to climb the 56 steps from my house to the road, without pain. Yes, I had a crutch and held on to the rail, but I didn’t have any pain.’
Results
The Hip Replacements have changed my whole life! I would recommend it. It really isn’t worth being fearful of the operation and living with that pain.
It took me just a few weeks to be confident to walk around indoors without a crutch and within a month I was happy to walk outside on my own without a crutch – I had my independence back.
